A Net
Collected by Ernst Vatter from the Ata Kiwan (mountain people) of the Solor-Alor archipelago, East Indonesia. Vatter failed to collect the native name for this figure. In Japan, where the same method is used, the figure is called "Seven-Meshed Net".

Step 1 - Place loop on 1 and 5; turning palms away from you pass 1 over 5f, then return with this string by rotating 1 down, toward you, and up; in the process 1n slips off 1 and becomes a 5n string; extend to absorb the slack.
Note: The original method has been modified to facilitate filming. Normally the performer extends after placing the loop on 1 and 5 (rather than waiting until the end), and maintains tension throughout the move. |
