A Dancer

Collected by Father Raymund from the people of Palau. Reconstructed by Mark Sherman. The crooked vertical loop at the center of the design represents Arsei, a legendary Palauan dancer.

Step 6 - 2 picks up the double oblique string that crosses the 1 loop.

1 releases its loops and arranges the pattern as needed to improve symmetry.

This intermediate design represents a Palauan stage, a long scaffold covered with thatch. The frame strings show us the outline of the scaffold, while the many diamonds represent men waiting to show off their dancing skills.
