Bird's Nest

Collected by Stig Rydén from the Toba people of Sombrero Negro, Formosa Province, Argentina. Reconstructed by Ron Read. Despite the design's intricacy, this figure is easy to make and its method of construction is easy to remember.

Step 2 - In this step each finger rotates a full turn to introduce a twist into its loop. This is easier to do if you first move the loop closer to the finger's tip. Practically speaking, the direction of the rotation does not matter, but to match the drawing in Rydén's article you must rotate the fingers as follows:

Rotate 1 a full turn toward you.

Rotate R2 a full turn away from you; rotate L2 a full turn toward you.

Rotate R3 a full turn away from you; rotate L3 a full turn toward you.

Rotate R4 a full turn away from you; rotate L4 a full turn toward you.

Rotate L5 a full turn toward you; rotate R5 a full turn toward you.
