A contemporary string figure series created by Steve Newkirk of Ojai, California. The series begins with a single diamond. Additional diamonds are added one-by-one. The number of diamonds that can be added is limited only by the length of the string loop.

Helpful hint - To prevent the center from collapsing when displaying multiple diamonds, adjust the strings just prior to the Newkirk Extension using the following technique:
With the opposite hand tug on the 1f strings to make them slightly longer than the 1n strings; press 1 against the side of 2 to prevent the adjusted strings from slipping, then shake the hands to evenly distribute the loose string; complete the Newkirk Extension by hooking down lower 1n with 5 and picking up upper 1n with 2. As a result the figure's frame is more rectangular and the diamonds are larger. |
